When I think about how fast digital marketing has grown in India, it’s honestly amazing. Even during the pandemic in 2020, when everything seemed to slow down, digital marketing just kept expanding. According to a recent survey, more than half of businesses are now tweaking their strategies to take full advantage of what digital marketing offers.
With the increasing use of the internet and smartphones in India, I believe this field has a bright future. If you're someone looking for a career that offers exciting opportunities and good pay, digital marketing is worth exploring. If you’re curious about how to start in this field, I’ll share what worked for me and the steps you can take to build a thriving career.
Why I Think Digital Marketing Is a Great Career Choice
Digital marketing is one of those fields where you can grow and learn endlessly, as long as you’re willing to put in the work. It’s expanding quickly and needs professionals from all sorts of backgrounds—whether you’re a designer, a writer, or someone who loves analyzing data. If you have the right skills and some experience, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
The Demand for Digital Marketers in India
Right now, there’s a huge demand for skilled digital marketers. Businesses in every industry need people who know how to market online. Whether it’s writing content, managing SEO, or running paid ad campaigns, there are plenty of job openings.
The only problem? There aren’t enough skilled professionals to fill these positions. This gap exists because most people aren’t taught digital marketing in schools or colleges. I didn’t know much about it either when I started. But the good news is, with a bit of effort, anyone can learn and grow in this field.
How Much Can You Earn?
Let’s talk money! Your salary in digital marketing will depend on your skills and experience. The more you know and the more you grow, the better your paycheck will be. In India, a digital marketing manager’s salary can range anywhere between ₹3 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs per year, depending on the company, location, and your expertise.
Do You Have What It Takes?
Before diving in, you might wonder, “Is digital marketing for me?” Here are a few key skills that I think are essential:
Creativity: You’ll need to come up with ideas for content, campaigns, and strategies.
Innovation: Thinking outside the box is crucial in this field.
Analytical Skills: You should be comfortable analyzing reports, graphs, and trends.
Willingness to Learn: Digital marketing changes all the time. Staying updated is key to staying relevant.
How to Get Started in Digital Marketing
Here’s how I began my journey and how you can start yours too:
Learn the Basics:
I started by taking a full-stack digital marketing course. It covered everything from SEO to social media marketing, content creation, and even analytics. Understanding the basics is so important before you specialize in any area.
Choose Your Niche:
Digital marketing has many branches. You could focus on SEO, content writing, video editing, or paid ads. I figured out what I enjoyed most (content creation) and focused on that.
Get Real Experience:
Once I had the knowledge, I looked for internships to put it to use. This hands-on experience taught me more than any course ever could.
Build Your Online Presence:
If you want to succeed in this field, you need a digital portfolio. I created my own website and showcased my work on LinkedIn and social media.
Find a Job or Freelance:
Starting with a full-time job helped me gain professional experience and confidence. Later, I started freelancing on the side, which gave me the flexibility to work on my terms.
Craft a Great Resume:
Your resume is often your first impression. I made sure mine highlighted my skills and included links to my portfolio.
Apply and Prepare for Interviews:
I actively applied for jobs that matched my skills and prepared for interviews by practicing common questions.
Network:
LinkedIn became my go-to platform. I connected with professionals in my field and reached out to potential clients and employers. Networking can open unexpected doors!
Get Certifications:
I also earned certifications in tools like Google Ads. While they’re not mandatory, they definitely make your profile stand out.
Keep Learning:
The digital marketing world changes constantly, so I make it a point to keep learning new tools, techniques, and trends.
If you’re passionate about learning, enjoy creativity, and love the idea of working online, digital marketing could be perfect for you. It’s a career that’s exciting, rewarding, and always evolving. So, why not give it a shot?
